Learning Objectives for Using Trauma-Informed Care in Pediatric Therapy:

  1. List the various types of trauma.
  2. Identify how stress and trauma can negatively impact the cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and physical development of children.
  3. Describe how an inadequate set of developmental competencies, coupled with poor coping skills and risky behavior, impede a child’s ability to successfully work on and achieve developmental tasks in the future.
  4. Describe the ‘cost of caring’ or secondary traumatic stress while working with children.
  5. Discuss the role caregivers play in promoting connections and buffering the effects of adversity.
  6. List strategies on how to create and maintain an environment that addresses traumatic stress and staff resilience.
  7. Identify three specific tools, resources, and strategies to help you when working with children and families as a trauma-informed provider.
  8. Discuss at least three actionable techniques to build trust and safety in relationships.
  9. Select appropriate strategies for regulation and co-regulation in a pediatric setting.

 

Learning Objectives for Reflective Practice in Peds:

  1. Define the meaning of reflective practice.
  2. Recognize core elements of reflective practice and supervision, based on current research.
  3. Identify tools to be an effective reflective practitioner.
  4. Identify barriers (personally experienced) to reflective practice.
  5. Identify and discuss different forms of reflective practice.
  6. Identify and describe a challenging scenario and list appropriate questions for “reflection-on-action.”
  7. List ways to encourage and incorporate reflective practice into their workplace.

Cara Koscinski, OTD, MOT, OTR/L

Andrew Klein, MS, OTR/L

Cara:

Dr. Cara Koscinski is many things!  She is the mother to two sons with autism, an occupational therapist, the original founder of The Pocket Occupational Therapist (now The Therapeutic Edge Collective), an author, educator, presenter, mentor, and more!

Dr. Koscinski has over 26 years of experience in the field of occupational therapy.  She has written 8 books related to the field and created countless resources such as continuing education courses, therapy materials, handouts, and more.

Andrew:

Andrew lives with his wife and 2 delightful children in Durham, NC.  He has been practicing as a pediatric OT for 15 years, in schools, homes, and outpatient clinics. He is a DIRFloortime® Expert Training Leader and Certified Trauma Professional.  Andrew currently specializes in therapist development and reflective supervision support for a team of 35+ therapists at Emerge Pediatric Therapy.
