Using a Strengths-Based Lens for Physical Therapy

Written by Dr. Anne Wolfe

Are you interested in using a more play focused and strengths based framework during your PT
sessions but just not sure how to do it? Then this Strengths-Based Lens for Physical Therapy course might be exactly what you need!

This course is taught by Dr. Anne Wolfe. Anne is a pediatric physical therapist with over 13
years of experience in pediatrics. She has worked in several sensory based pediatric therapy
clinics and has seen the difference a strengths based approach can make in treatment. She
continues to serve patients and their families in the clinic, as well as, provide 1:1 mentorship to
PTs and PTAs.

Strengths Based Therapy Approach for Physical Therapy focuses on helping clinicians better
their understanding of how our clients sensory processing systems impact their ability to learn
and participate across therapy domains. It focuses on using a holistic approach to physical
therapy sessions that integrates sensory regulation strategies throughout activities to improve
overall participation and enjoyment (for both PTs and their clients!). We are taking you past
using rewards as motivators during sessions to gain compliance, and helping therapists
recognize the value in meeting our clients where they are to promote intrinsic motivation and
gross motor growth.

This Strengths-Based Lens for Physical Therapy course will walk you through foundational sensory processing information, evaluation including goal setting and standardized testing, treatment sessions, and parent education to ensure you feel confident pulling in a new framework as soon as you complete the course.

You can apply this course across a wide variety of diagnoses but might find that it fits particularly well for autistic clients or clients who need support for sensory processing and regulation when they are faced with a challenging task. When we collectively shift our mindset to value
connection with the whole child, their goals and their interests we can move away from a behavioral model toward something so much more meaningful.

This is course is best suited to :
New grad PTs/PTAs who are starting in pediatrics

PTs/PTAs with experience who are transitioning from another specialty into the peds world
PTs/PTAs who may already have peds experience but want to find a better fit for their clients

Are you ready to dive in? Let’s go!
