Occupational Therapy – Doctorate or Masters?

This blog post was written by our friend, Brandi Myles, OTS.
In this post, she gives her reasons for choosing her course of study.

Hello all,

As I am nearing the end of my OTD program I have compiled a list of 4 reasons I am happy I chose the doctoral route.

FIRST I can be a bit of a perfectionist:

An OTD program requires more clinical training with its classification as a clinical or practice-based degree. Along with the additional hands-on training, I had time for additional classes with in-depth training to lead within the field of OT, advocate, and understand and produce clinical research. More time to perfect my craft and learn my personal OT style.

SECOND I want to teach in the future:

My favorite teachers throughout my undergraduate coursework were those who were clinical OTs. They brought experience along with their knowledge which made for memorable lessons.

THIRD Our field is growing, quickly!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field’s expected growth from 2020-2030 is 34% (the average growth rate is 8%). Consequently, 16,800 jobs are expected to come about! The extra clinical training can put you at an advantage in this instance.

FINALLY, You can’t rush greatness!

While some may frown at a longer program (including myself during a few semesters) there are MANY silver linings. The time allows for more opportunity for hands-on experience and more time to establish connections and network through group projects and opportunities presented by professors (which is how I scored this awesome experience along with my caretaker position)! The time also allows for working in your professor’s lab, being a teaching assistant, or joining organizations you may not have felt ready for at the beginning of your program.
